CWA Local 7076 seeks a project organizer with a passion for social justice to do internal organizing for several public sector bargaining units and one private sector healthcare unit.
CWA Local 7076 represents a diverse cross-section of New Mexico’s public workforce–including State government workers, university staff, nurses, and city workers–to address the critical issues we all face. Our mission is to champion and defend the interests and well-being of public sector workers, as well as to build and sustain social and economic justice in our workplaces and communities.
The project organizer will be accountable to and supported by the local’s executive board, the membership at large, and the Organizing Coordinator. In this position, the project organizer will be responsible for organizing workers through one-on-one conversations and leadership development. Full-time is preferred but part-time availability will be considered. Our membership is located across the state of NM and some travel may be required. This position has the option to work from home or from our Union hall in Santa Fe.
On-the-job training for this position is provided. This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement with OPEIU Local 251.
Responsibilities:
- Recruit new members to the union in collaboration with current members and the Organizing Committee.
- Communicate with membership and potential members through one-on-ones, emails, phone calls, Slack, text messages, Signal, and other digital platforms.
- Recruit new stewards within the union through organic leader identification.
- Implement organizing strategies and help develop campaign plans.
- Manage access to all relevant documents and union communication to ensure that member information is kept private and secure.
- Support the Executive Board and other leadership.
- Plan, coordinate, and attend organizing events and direct actions.
- Plan, coordinate, and attend regular committee and membership meetings.
- Design and create flyers, posters, and other forms of advertising, in collaboration with the Communications Committee.
- Conduct worksite visits of all employment positions eligible to join the union.

- Proficient with technology including but not limited to Slack, Google Docs and Sheets, Zoom, email, text messaging, Signal, and ActionBuilder, or the ability and willingness to learn these platforms.
- Ability to work as a team member, as well as take individual initiative with minimal supervision.
- Strong time-management skills and the ability to self-motivate.
- NM Driver’s license.
- Previous union and/or community organizing experience.
- Skills in supporting leadership development.
Priority consideration will be given to applicants who possess the following skills:
● Basic knowledge of New Mexico labor law (PEBA) and union organizing efforts in New Mexico.
● Previous experience organizing workers in the public sector.
● Previous/current union membership.
● Fluency in Spanish.
Compensation:
This position has a salary of $22.31/hr – $28/hr depending on experience. Benefits include healthcare and retirement stipends, paid vacation, and sick leave. Reimbursement will be provided for personal equipment used on the job (such as cell phone) and mileage.
